Roundup of January 2017 Posts

Last month was both busy and difficult. Busy because I spent a lot of time writing the content for a client’s new website (www.wickedreports.com) and working to get it up and running. Difficult because I got sick on January 2 and have been sick, off and on, since then. This is week six and not being about to sleep or breathe is getting old.

Through it all I have learned a few things:

  • antibiotic resistanceZithromycin no longer works on sinus infections—or at least my sinus infection. Amoxicillin had long ago dropped out of the race but five days of a Z-Pack used to do it. Not any more. Even Augmentin, the amped-up version of Amoxicillin, did not touch it. Yesterday I started on Levofloxacin and that appears to be making inroads.
  • This really makes the reality of antibiotic resistance up close and personal. I don’t want to think about what happens when antibiotics not longer work on sinus infections.
  • Thinking and working are difficult when your head is stuffed up tighter than a turkey at Thanksgiving and you can’t sleep at night because you can’t breathe. I knew this from experience but six weeks of it really brings the concept home.  My laptop, keyboard and mouse are probably radioactive, though.
  • Post-nasal drip and resulting spasmodic cough really suck.
  • Walk-in clinics can be a godsend on weekends when doctor’s offices are closed because, you know, we’re all healthy on weekends.
  • Weight just floats right off you when you can’t taste food and don’t have a big appetite anyway.
  • Working takes your mind off physical misery better than sitting up watching the Science Channel at 2:00 a.m.

Ideas Out the Window

The combination of illness and work also kept me from writing my usual allotment of posts. I guess bright ideas and creative thinking also go out the window when you can’t think. I would think, “What am I going to write today?” and then stare dully out the window. Or take a nap.

In addition I lacked the time or energy to go into Boston and research new topics for my weekly post about interesting places in the city. I have some ideas, though.

Given those challenges and obstacles, here’s my collection of the posts that Susanne and I wrote along with a guest post from my friend Alane.
