Roundup of June 2020 Posts

So, now we slide into a summer that feels like no other summer before it.

Tours Without Tourists

Boston By Foot walking tours and Haunted Boston ghost tours usually ramp up in April and May with lots of private tours for students on field trips. The cruise ships start coming in during June and I would be off to the races, giving multiple tours every week on foot and in a bus. It would be tiring but satisfying, as I keep busy, lose weight and make money at the same time. This year, I stay home and feel like I’m missing something.

Boston By Foot, Footloose on the Freedom Trail, June 2020 Posts, Sam AdamsTo make up for that, I have given several Zoom tours and have a private Boston By Foot tour coming up. In addition, I will be in Boston on the Fourth to talk about the Old Granary Burying Ground. Boston By Foot’s Zoom tour called “Footloose on the Freedom Trail,” sponsored by Sam Adams Beer.

Come on along, wherever you live: distance is no obstacle on Zoom. I’ll show you where the real Sam Adams is socially distancing. (He’s been there since 1803.)

No Hot Dogs, No Lobster Rolls

Usually I divide summer into segments: Memorial Day, Independence Day, the All-Star Break, and Labor Day.

Lobster Rolls, Red's Eats, Wiscasset, Maine, travel bugMemorial Day recedes in the rear-view mirror without the outings, cookouts, lobster rolls, and day trips that usually highlight the long weekend. The Fourth is coming up minus the annual Sudbury parade and the cookout at the First Parish of Sudbury that’s one of our major fundraisers for the year.

Baseball is still limping its way toward a truncated season that may actually get started before what used to be the All-Star Break—or not. By the time an umpire says, “Play Ball!” for the first time, only the sports writers may be watching.

Beaches open and then close again. Here in Massachusetts, we have added giant stinging jellyfish to coronavirus as reasons to avoid the beach. I’ll bet the great white sharks off Cape Cod are wondering where all the people went.
