Things have been so busy, this is the first time I have had to pull together a roundup of October 2016 posts. With Halloween over, we look ahead to Thanksgiving. Apples gave way to pumpkins that, in turn, are making room for turkeys. Fall seems to be all about eating. Maybe, like bears, we want to prepare for winter with a layer of insulating fat. Hmmm.
Susanne has broken out the Madagascar Bourbon vanilla extract as she gears up for baking. I finished my bottle this morning and have to make do with organic vanilla. My wall oven, which has been getting more and more difficult, finally packed it in. We could have repaired it for nearly half of what a new oven would cost. But we both hate this Thermador monster, which makes an incredible amount of noise and requires an hour to heat up. I’m still using it — everything just takes longer — but the new oven arrives on Tuesday morning.
Yankee Magazine’s brown bread muffins are cooling and a streusel coffee cake is on its second hour. I’m waiting for the monster to heat up to pastry temperature for the raisin squares (my mother’s recipe). Coffee hour after church tomorrow should go well. You’re all invited.
In the meantime, here’s a roundup of October 2016 posts. Grab a cup of coffee and piece of your own cake and catch up. Just don’t spill any coffee on your laptop!
